One of the first things that I was told during the Network Marketing meetings was the business was not about selling but of sharing. That is, to do this type of business, all we had to do is tell our friends about the great qualities of the products we were promoting. I was also told that the business opportunity did not require any skills in selling, because, again, it was just a matter of telling people about the compensation plan and that the products and the business in Network Marketing would sell themselves.

And of course, because that was the way that I was introduced to the business of Network Marketing, that was also the way I was introducing it. During the weekly meetings we were told that the system was easy to do. But despite being easy, I found it difficult to no only sell the products but to sponsor new members into my Network Marketing business.

If You Are In Network Marketing, You Are In Sales

Years later, the truth was evident to me: If you are a Network Marketing business it means that you are in sales. In fact, one is always selling something, it may be an idea, time or some product. Every time there is an exchange of money there is a sale. We cannot escape the realization that if we recommend our product and our business opportunity in Network Marketing, we are in fact selling.

When we talk about our products or our Network Marketing business to family, friends or acquaintances, we do it with a personal interest, therefore the activity is classified as sales. It is not an impartial recommendation, like the one would make when we go to see a movie we like or to a restaurant, because the objective of our recommendation is to attract people to our Network Marketing business.

So, now I can see that my failure with the effort to promote my Network Marketing business and in selling my products was the fact that we did not have selling technical skills nor marketing methods. We did not have business training. We were told that anyone could do the business, but what they meant was that anyone could join. But not everyone could be successful with their Network Marketing business.

The truth is that our sponsors in those Network Marketing business we started were more interested in recruiting distributors and thus increase their sales with the autoship, than in helping their people grow their Network Marketing business.

But every time we recommend our Network Marketing business opportunity, the questions in the person’s mind is What’s in it for me? So, it’s important that we show our prospects the benefits with our Network Marketing opportunity.

Because one starts an enterprise to reach certain goals and the vehicle we use to reach them is more important than the product itself. The truth is that there are many quality products out there being distributed by different companies, and if we are trying to promote our business opportunity in Network Marketing, then we should start there, showing the qualities of the business, showing the marketing techniques used, showing the training distributors get. All that is vital knowledge that can be applied to any product. These days, the Network Marketing business needs techniques completely different to the ones we used years ago.

The personal product recommendation should be only one part of our efforts in Network Marketing. It’s necessary to apply modern techniques to be able to attract entrepreneurs that at this precise moment are actively looking for a business opportunity. We wouldn’t be able to reach our goals by simply reciting the quality of our products. Marketing, and specially Network Marketing has become a science with specific techniques.

Using the Internet is indispensable and it can become the exclusive method we use to promote our Network Marketing business (or businesses!). If we apply certain specific techniques with this medium, we can reach an audience much bigger than the one we could reach with the old fashioned method of making our list with family, friend and acquaintances. Just in Google there are thousands of searches for Network Marketing business opportunities this very moment. It would be a good idea to find the way to reach those entrepreneurs.

To be successful with our Network Marketing business, we have to make a connection with the people who are looking for that opportunity. Just knowing your product inside out is not enough. We have to see that connection between the needs of the prospect and how our products and services will help them.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if the prospects were too look for us and ask us more information about our Network Marketing opportunity?

In Network Marketing Not everyone is your prospect

I remember the first time I worked in Network Marketing. According to my upline, in Network Marketing I had to start with our warm market and make a list with all my family members, friends and acquaintances. Then, he advised me to play a game of association to juggle my memory, asking myself questions like Who is your mechanic? Who is your dentist? Your doctor?, etc. The exercises were important to grow my business in Network Marketing.

And I did it. I wrote my list and started to call my prospects, to show them my opportunity in Network Marketing. Soon I knew that no everyone in my list were at all interested in my business opportunity nor even in trying my products. And not everyone seemed to want to be rich neither! In fact, some of them told me so. Out of all the people I contacted using this method, only one or two begun their own business to later giving up. They followed the same model of Network Marketing that I followed.

I made every effort to promote my Network Marketing. I called people, made appointments, went to their homes and showed the plan. I went to the weekly meetings where sometimes we took, almost pushing, some “guest” to listen to a speaker explain the marketing plan and to build a dream en the mind of the people there. After a year or so and a lot of money and effort without results, I quit Network Marketing. Years later I tried again with another company. And I gave it up again.

Not everyone is your prospect in Network Marketing

Those experiences taught me an important lesson. In Network Marketing not everybody is your prospect, as I was told. According to my upline, everybody wanted and needed this opportunity that I was bringing them, just that they did not know it yet. So it was my job to show them the way to reach their dreams through Network Marketing.

But I found many reasons why my prospects did not want to work in Network Marketing:

. Some simply liked their job
. Others knew about Network Marketing and rejected the concept
. Others believed that being poor was a spiritual virtue
. There were some who did not have the money and time to invest in Network Marketing

Working in Network Marketing under those circumstances, trying to convince someone to join and start a new enterprise was a great effort that 99% of the time resulted in the waste of my scarce resources. And I came across the phenomenon that the closer the the person was to me, the less they wanted to work with me. From that I concluded that the last people I should contact are my family and close friends. For the effect of Network Marketing, maybe is better not contact them at all!

There has to be a better way of working in Network Marketing

In Network Marketing, our resources like time, money and energy mental and physical are so precious that we can not waste them in people that simply do not want or can not work with us. En Network Marketing we cannot go around hoping that of all people we contact someone rises her hand. The truth is that many entrepreneurs have been able to make it that way, but the majority simply get tired, frustrated and finally give up, leaving some times for many years their work in Network Marketing.

There has to be a way to attract to our business in Network Marketing those prospects who really are interested. Those interested are the entrepreneurs that in this precise moment are actively looking for a business opportunity to get out of their situation -whatever it is- in which they are. When they take the time to search for a business opportunity they have in fact risen their hand and are ready to start. You don’t have to convince them about the advantages of Network Marketing because they already know. Maybe even they worked in Network Marketing before.

The truth is that, while we promote our business opportunity in Network Marketing, nobody deserves our time until they have showed their interest in what we have and have asked for more information. Not until the person has come to us first can we dedicate them much of our time, because, who finds who first is very important. The difference is that if the person finds us first -asks for more information about our Network Marketing business- we become consultants. But if we go around looking for them, we become a sales person. And everybody wants to buy, but nobody wants to be sold.

We already know that is not enough that someone just wants to start their own business, no even in Network Marketing. I found many who wanted to do just that, but only a few took the necessary steps to carry it out. Until a person takes action and searches for the way to start their own business he is only an spectator, and we want players to participate in our Network Marketing team.

For all we know, our prospect could be someone who simply hates Network Marketing or someone who prefers to feel the security of a paycheck. Then, if we try to promote our business opportunity with someone like that, we would find insurmountable obstacles in the promotion of our Network Marketing business.

What would happen if instead of wasting money and effort with prospects for our opportunity in Network Marketing, people were to look for us to request more information about what we do? To achieve that is the essence of practicing attraction in our Network Marketing business.
